This action research plan takes place in second grade classroom at Innovation Elementary School. The school is in a rural New Hampshire setting, with mostly middle income families. The school services approximately 525 students, K-6. There is a 20% special education population, with Speech Language as the primary disability. The population is almost 97% Caucasian (see figure 1), and English is predominately the only language spoken by students. The school free and reduced lunch rate is 9%. As well, there is a high parent involvement in the school with a strong focus on the arts. The school serves as the heart of the small town, where the population is currently just over 5,000 I serve as the classroom teacher. While this is my second year at the school, it is my seventeenth year in education. At Innovation Elementary School there is a focus on collaboration and applied projects in the younger grades, with an emphasis on creative thinking. There are 19 students in the classroom, three with Individualized Education Plans. There is a one-to-one para-educator who assists a student with high emotional and behavioral needs. There are only 7 girls in the classroom, and 12 boys. The students are comfortable with one another, as many have known each other from a young age. Figure 1
